Hercules is the first movie that comes to mind when I consider good storytelling of a myth. This story has many aspects that make it great. Such as: it’s memorable, it inspires action, etc. I believe this myth is one that needs to be modeled after, when in a day, I will need to create my own character (see other blog). So, if you want to know more about the storytelling of Hercules just keep reading.
The greatest part of Hercules is the storytelling coming from the 5 singing women. They are able to explain what is happening, while still grabbing AND keeping the attention of the audience. Honestly, I don’t know what about this movie that doesn’t work. It is fun and lighthearted while still being true to the original myth (just with a Disney twist).
Just as explained in our one reading (located here), this particular movie is an archetypal story. Meaning it is a story with something like a great birth or the underworld.
Hercules covers many ideas discussed in our readings/video we had this past week. When I am thinking about how I am going to design my character, I consider this to attempt to model after.
